Budget:Governor Seyi Makinde Attains Another UNESCO Standard, Budgets 20.88% on Education

– The Governor of Oyo State, Engr Seyi Makinde has fulfilled yet another United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)’s standard by providing more than 20% in the appropriation he submitted earlier today to the State Assembly for 2024. In the budget document, Governor Makinde appropriated the sum of N90,664,994,252, representing 20.88%, which is the highest of all the sectors in the total budget of N434,221,765,938.79.

This figure is consistent with the January 25, 2023 declaration of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO), which recommended that member nations should earmark four to six percent of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) or 15 to 20 percent of public expenditure (annual budget) to fund education.

Since the inception of his administration in 2019, Governor Makinde has always prioritised education and has provided more money for the sector, and from available records, the Governor is among the first Governors in the country that have been able to meet the UNESCO standards in recent times.
