Governor Douye Diri today joined in the formal unveiling of the United Nations Convention for Conserving River Deltas (UNCCRD) at the ongoing Climate Change Conference, COP 28 in Dubai.
The gathering of eminent leaders across the globe including Nigeria’s President, HE Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in Dubai at this time underpins the sense of commitment and determination to save our planet.
From the Niger Delta region where Bayelsa State is located, the impact of climate change continues to wreak unimaginable havoc on the environment, ecosystem, and human resources, hence, this unveiling today to draw global attention to the threatening and impending extinction of world’s deltas and wetlands.
While the battle of devastating perennial flood, experienced in 2022 in Nigeria, the ocean surge and rising sea water is threatening existence of several Bayelsa State coastal communities such as Agge, Akassa, Aghoro, Brass, Ekeni, Ezetu, Foropa, Koluama 1 & 2, Odioama and Okpoama.
This is why we have joined in the “Deltas Unite” environmental campaign to seek global attention in addressing this situation.
The government of Bayelsa State has promised continue to support and give priority attention to all activities and programmes of “Deltas Unite.
“To this end, the Governor has announced the readiness of the government of Bayelsa State to host the Inaugural International Summit of the Deltas in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Nigeria in 2024.
Governor Douye Diri further stressed saying this calls for action to achieve a clean and safe environment to promote sustainable living.
