Governor of Plateau State wants state to assert control over its resources

The Plateau State Governor ,Caleb Mutfwang through the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Mineral Development, has commenced a two-day stakeholders’ consultation forum on emerging reforms in Nigeria’s mining sector.

The Governor of Plateau State officially declared the forum opened, expressing his gratitude to God for the opportunity to begin the week with discussions on such a vital and critical sector. Given Plateau State’s rich mineral deposits, the governor firmly believes that Plateau should not be considered among the poor states in Nigeria. Unfortunately, many of the states minerals have been exported without adding value to the state due to legislative structures.

The governor emphasized the need for Plateau State to assert control over its resources, stating that the time has come, and the time is now for us to take our destiny into our hands.

The governor also urged traditional rulers to stand firm against illegal mining, assuring them that the government will step in to ensure all mining activities are conducted within the law.

The forum’s purpose is to reflect on missed opportunities and develop strategies for progress. The governor also addressed the importance of remedying existing mining ponds and ensuring all key players comply with local mining laws. Additionally, the state will, hencefort engage directly in selling our minerals in the market.
