Vice President Kashim Shettima led a high-powered Federal Government delegation to the broken dam induced flood disaster in Maiduguri metropolis for an on-the-spot assessment and to commiserate with the people and government of Borno State.
The DG NEMA also joined the delegation in continuation of our coordination of ongoing response operations there.
Vice President Shettima, while addressing the displaced persons currently taking refuge at the Bakkasi camp provided by Borno Stategovernment, restated the commitment of the government to supporting victims and communities of the flood and ensuring that recovery efforts reach every corner impacted by the disaster. The delegation also visited the palace of the Shehu of Borno, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Umar Garba Al Amin El-Kanemi.
In the same vein, NEMA has activated the deployment of additional search and rescue personnel and facilities to strengthen the on-going rescue of residents that are trapped in their homes. In addition, NEMA has warned against likelihood of water borne epidemic that may result from flood contamination of household water. NEMA is therefore providing safe clean water to the temporary shelters provided for the displaced residents, including Bakassi camp.
NEMA officials, together with personnel from other sister agencies, are working round the clock to provide safety and welfare to all affected. NEMA equally commend the good people of the state who are voluntarily working with us in providing humanitarian assistance.
