RIVERS ASSEMBLY FLOOD COMMITTEE INTENSIFIES OVERSIGHT, MEETS LGAs, ENVIRONMENT MINISTRIES AHEAD OF NIMET FORCAST

 

…As Assembly Assures of all Neccesary Support to Tackle Flooding Challenges

The Committee on Flooding of the Rivers State House of Assembly under the leadership of the Deputy Speaker, Rt Hon Orubienimigha Adolphus Timothy today met with Local Government Chairmen of flood-prone areas in Rivers State as contained in the 2024 NIMET forcast.

The LGAs in attendance of the meeting which held at the Assembly’s temporary office in Port Harcourt, were PHALGA, Okrika,Tai, Etche, Ogu-Bolo, Bonny, Andoni, Degema, Asari-Toru, and Akuku-Toru, together with representatives of the Ministry of Health.

Also in attendance of the meeting was the Leader of the House, Hon Sokari Goodboy Sokari and the Honourable Commissioner for Environment, Hon Sydney Tambari Gbara, with central focus on the preparedness of the forecasted flood-prone LGA.swith a mandate for increased sensitisation to their constituents, improvised IDP camps in the various LGAs, and partnership with the Ministry of Environment for the specialised welfare of flood victims.

The Deputy Speaker hinted on the disposition of the state Assembly towards the 2024 flood forcast by NIMET with a view to provide every necessary support towards decreasing the impact of flooding in Rivers State.
