The Ogun State Commissioner of Police while launching the Inspector General safe school initiative and the Ogun State Police Command school protection squad said the occasion marks a fundamental moment in our commitment to ensuring the safety and security of our educational institutions that are not only, sanctuaries of knowledge but also a nurturing ground for the future leaders of our country.
In his address, the CP told his audience that education is the foundation of our society, a catalyst for progress where thoughts are conceived, ideas are exchanged, and dreams are nurtured. This explains why this sacred space must be protected against threats.
Threats that can disrupt learning, instil fear, or endanger the lives of those who walk through the circumference. The recent surge in the incidents of violence and insecurity in schools underscores the urgent need for a holistic approach to the safety of our schools. Thus, safety in schools is not merely an administrative concern but a collective moral obligation. When students feel secure, they flourish academically and socially. A safe educational environment encourages attendance and promotes well-being, allowing parents and educators to concentrate on nurturing talents and shaping responsible citizens.
The safety of our children in schools is deeply interwined with the security of our communities. When our schools are safe havens, the entire community benefits. Safe schools breed productive citizens who contribute positively to society, thereby becoming a source of pride by reflecting the values and strength of their neighbourhoods. Conversely, when our schools are vulnerable, the ripple effect can reverberate throughout our communities, fostering environments of distrust, fear, and instability.
The CP also said that a proactive approach to school safety enhances community resilience. Schools are microcosms of our society. Thus, addressing safety concerns in schools translates to a safer, more secure community for everyone.
The police force, alongside educational authorities and community stakeholders, must work hand-in-hand to ensure that our schools are fortified against any potential threats.
The initiative, through comprehensive assessments, will identify risk factors specific to each institution. Training programs will be instituted for educators, administrators, and security personnel, who will, in turn, leverage on the acquired skills to recognize and respond to threats
modern technology will also be utilized, and intelligence led policing to ensure proactive law enforcement presence around our schools.
The school protection squad has a team of dedicated trained personnel who will collaborate closely with schools to foster an environment of safety. They will conduct regular patrols, facilitate workshops with students on personal safety, and engage with parents and educators to create open lines of communication as this will ensure the success of the squad operations.
The CP urged synergy among all stakeholders by investing efforts, resources, and hearts to foster a culture of safety in our schools
