The North-East Development Commission (NEDC), in partnership with Kolmarg Eyesight Foundation, has launched a transformative medical eye care outreach in Taraba State to combat rising cases of visual impairment among underserved populations. The initiative targets six local governments across Taraba’s three senatorial zones—Jalingo, Yorro, Gassol, Sardauna, Wukari, and Ibi—providing vital eye care services to those who cannot afford them. Services offered include cataract and minor eye surgeries, glaucoma and diabetic eye screenings, refraction and dispensing of reading glasses, and treatment of common eye conditions.
The inaugural outreach was held from December 16–18, 2024, at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jalingo, with a flag-off ceremony attended by key stakeholders, including representatives of the NEDC, traditional and religious leaders, and local government officials. During the three-day event, 1,105 patients received care, with 111 cataract surgeries*, *9 minor eye surgeries.
