NAFDAC has sealed off a Chinese supermarket in Wuse 2, Abuja, for selling expired products and items labelled entirely in Chinese without English translations, which violates NAFDAC regulations.
The supermarket, located at Azba Mall on Durban Street, is owned by Chinese nationals who claimed they were in the process of obtaining NAFDAC approval and translating product labels. Over 90% of the items on the shelves were labelled in Chinese.
Expired products were also discovered during the inspection. The agency is investigating how these products entered the country in such quantities without proper checks and has extended the probe to the supermarket’s warehouse to ensure public safety.
The agency has notified the products sold with labels in foreign languages without English translations violate NAFDAC labelling guidelines and are illegal.
The agency has invited the supermarket’s management for further investigation and also reaffirm it commitment to protecting public health.
