LAMATA Engages Local Governments for Purple Line Rail Project

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has begun stakeholder engagement meetings as a precursor to scoping activities for the proposed Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Purple Line project.

A team from LAMATA visited Ikeja and Agege Local Government Areas as well as Ojodu Local Council Development Authority to initiate discussions with local stakeholders today. The Purple Line will cross cross two local governments in Ogun and five local governments and four other Local Development Areas.

During the visit, local government officials expressed their support for the project. Engr. Dr. Balogun Mojeed, Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, affirmed his commitment to the project, emphasizing its potential to improve the lives of Lagos residents and contribute to the city’s development as a smart city.

In Agege, Hon. Rasheed Adaranijo, representing the Local Government Chairman, Chief Kola Egunjobi, assured the LAMATA team of the council’s readiness to support the initiative. Similarly, Hon. David Odunmbaku of Ojodu Local Council Development Area commended the Governor for undertaking such impactful projects, highlighting the long-awaited need for an intermodal transport system in Lagos.

The LRMT Purple Line, a 57km rail line stretching from Redemption Camp in Ogun State to Volkswagen area along the Lagos Badagry Expressway, will feature 17 stations. It is designed to integrate with the Red Line at Agege, the Blue Line at Volkswagen, and the Yellow Line at Isheri-Osun, creating a comprehensive and interconnected public transportation network.

The stakeholder engagement process is being conducted by Global Impact Environmental Consulting Limited, as a necessary requirement set by the Federal Ministry of Environment for Environmental and Social Impact Assessment, with representatives from LAMATA including the Lead Consultant, Dr. Babatunde Osho, Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, Architect Dipo Oshobu, and Dipo Quadri in attendance.

This engagement is in line with the global best practices and procedures for conducting Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) prior to project implementation.
