The 35th edition of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025) is now underway in Morocco, with group stage matches delivering early drama across the tournament’s six host cities.
On December 24, defending champions Ivory Coast kicked off their title defense in Group F with a hard-fought narrow victory over Mozambique at the Stade de Marrakech. The Elephants secured the win despite a resilient performance from the Mambas, setting a strong tone for their campaign in a competitive group that also includes five-time winners Cameroon and Gabon.
In the same group, Cameroon earned a solid victory against Gabon in their evening clash, showcasing their experience as one of Africa’s most decorated sides.
Meanwhile, in Group E, 2019 champions Algeria delivered a commanding performance, dominating Sudan to claim a convincing win and underline their status as contenders in North African conditions.
The tournament, featuring 24 teams divided into six groups, began on December 21 with a spectacular opening ceremony in Rabat, followed by hosts Morocco’s opening match. Matches continue through the holiday period, with the group stage running until December 31, before the knockout rounds begin in January, culminating in the final on January 18, 2026.
