Nigeria opened their AFCON 2025 campaign with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over a spirited Tanzania side, showing both their attacking quality and areas that still need sharpening.
The Super Eagles started brightly, pressing high and moving the ball with confidence. Their early dominance paid off when Nigeria took the lead through a well-worked attacking move, finished calmly by Semi Ajayi in the 36th minute to set the tone for the match. With control of midfield and quick transitions down the wings, Nigeria looked comfortable for long spells in the first half.
Tanzania, however, refused to sit back. After absorbing pressure, they grew into the game and were rewarded with an equaliser that briefly stunned the Nigerian defence. The goal came from determined buildup play in the 50th minute immediately after the start of the second half , highlighting Tanzania’s discipline and belief, and it shifted the momentum heading into a tense period of the match.
Immediately after conceding the equalizer , Nigeria responded with greater urgency. Their experience showed as they increased the tempo and pushed higher up the pitch. The winning goal arrived just 2 minutes after the equalizer in the 52nd minute through Ademola Lookman after sustained pressure, capitalising on a defensive lapse to restore Nigeria’s lead. From that point, the Super Eagles managed the game well, keeping possession and limiting Tanzania’s chances.
Tanzania deserve credit for their performance, as they matched Nigeria’s intensity for much of the contest and showed they can compete at this level. Nigeria, meanwhile, will be pleased with the result but aware that improvements are needed defensively as the tournament progresses.
Overall, it was an entertaining and competitive encounter that set a strong foundation for Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 journey while earning Tanzania respect despite the defeat.
