ASUU Issues Ultimatum: Nationwide University Shutdown Imminent This Friday

Strike Threatens to Paralyze Academic and Healthcare Services, Deepening National Frustration

ABUJA, Nigeria – The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared an indefinite, nationwide strike, set to commence this Friday, following the Federal Government’s alleged failure to honour a one-month ultimatum. This decision threatens to grind academic activities to a halt in public universities across Nigeria, disrupting the education of millions and crippling crucial healthcare services in teaching hospitals.

The impending industrial action, announced after ASUU’s National Executive Council meeting, signals a dramatic escalation in the long-standing dispute between the union and the government. Should the strike proceed, it will mark a return to the protracted academic disruptions that have plagued Nigeria’s tertiary education system for over a decade.

The organization via its X handle on Tuesday, cited the government’s “deafening silence and deliberate provocation as the primary catalyst for the impending shutdown. The union’s grievances are anchored on several unresolved issues.

The body insists the 16-year-old agreement is due for a review to reflect current economic realities, rejecting the government’s recent 35% salary increase proposal as “an insulting pittance.”

The union demands the immediate release of three and a half months of salaries withheld from the 2022 strike period, alongside outstanding promotion arrears and Earned Academic Allowances.

ASUU is also pressing for the release of allocated funds for the revitalization of decaying university infrastructure.
Still , the standoff continues over the government’s insistence on using the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), which ASUU claims is flawed, versus its own University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS).

According to ASSU , the government’s inaction is not a matter of capacity, but of will, giving the fact federal revenue increased significantly between 2022 and 2024.

The ripple effects of a full-scale strike are expected to be severe and far-reaching.

For students, this means an abrupt suspension of academic activities and an uncertain future. “We are the ones who always pay the price,” said Chinedu Okoro, a 300-level Political Science student at the University of Lagos. “Just when we thought our academic calendar was stabilizing, we are faced with another potentially endless wait. It is deeply disheartening.”

The impact is particularly acute in faculties of medicine and health sciences, where clinical training cannot be easily rescheduled. “A six-year medical program is at risk of stretching to eight years,” warned a consultant at the University College Hospital, Ibadan. “This constant disruption is creating a generation of half-baked professionals.”

Public frustration is mounting, with many Nigerians taking to social media to express their exhaustion with the cyclical nature of the disputes. The hashtag #EndASUUSTrike is already trending, with citizens calling on both parties to find a lasting solution.

As the Friday deadline looms, the nation watches to see if last-minute negotiations will avert the crisis. ASUU has maintained that the strike is “100% avoidable” if the government demonstrates seriousness by presenting a concrete and acceptable proposal.

The Federal Ministry of Education has yet to issue an official statement on the ultimatum.

With the clock ticking, millions of students, parents, and university staff face an anxious wait, hoping for a resolution that will keep the university gates open.
