Khan Younis, Gaza –
An Israeli drone strike targeted a tent encampment for displaced Palestinians in the al-Mawasi area west of Khan Younis on Wednesday, killing five people, including two children aged 8 and 10, and wounding at least 32 others, according to Gaza’s civil defense agency and medics at the nearby Kuwait Field Hospital.
The attack struck near the Kuwaiti Field Hospital in southern Gaza, hitting shelters housing families displaced by the ongoing conflict. Palestinian authorities described the strike as targeting civilians in a designated humanitarian zone.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the airstrike was in response to an earlier clash in nearby Rafah, where five Israeli soldiers were wounded—one seriously—when Palestinian militants emerged from an underground tunnel and opened fire on troops. The IDF described the incident as a “blatant violation” of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire that took effect on October 10, 2025, and said the strike eliminated a Hamas operative involved in the attack.
Clashes and exchanges of fire have persisted in parts of southern Gaza, particularly around Rafah and Khan Younis, despite the truce, which has seen repeated accusations of violations from both sides. Gaza health officials report hundreds of Palestinians killed since the ceasefire began, while Israel maintains its operations target militants threatening its forces.
The incident underscores the fragility of the ceasefire as indirect talks mediated by Qatar and Egypt continue, with tensions heightened over issues including the reopening of the Rafah border crossing and the future governance of Gaza.
