In a significant move to enhance the welfare of university lecturers and promote lasting industrial harmony in Nigeria’s education sector, the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) granting a 40 per cent salary increase along with improved allowances.
This agreement, following 16 years of extended negotiations and renegotiations of the 2009 FG-ASUU pact, was formally sealed and unveiled in Abuja, with the new pay structure taking effect from January 1, 2026, as approved by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC).
The 40 per cent review will be implemented through the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA). This allowance is designed to cover essential academic expenses, including journal publications, conference attendance, internet services, learned society membership, and book allowances.
Additionally, the MoU provides for the supply of vital tools and resources to facilitate effective teaching and research. It aims to bolster postgraduate supervision, fieldwork, clinical duties, and examination moderation.
The signing of this agreement is expected to put an end to the recurring university shutdowns caused by disputes between lecturers and the federal government. It will help ensure adherence to academic calendars, restore stability to the university system, boost productivity, and enhance the global competitiveness of Nigerian universities.
