Johannesburg, December 22, 2025 – Clarion Newschannel
South African authorities have launched an intensive manhunt following a brutal mass shooting that claimed nine lives and left at least 10 others wounded at a tavern in Bekkersdal township, west of Johannesburg.
The attack unfolded just before 1 a.m. on Sunday, December 21, at the KwaNoxolo tavern in the Tambo section of Bekkersdal, a gold mining area plagued by poverty and illicit activities. According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), approximately 12 unidentified gunmen arrived in a white minibus and a silver sedan, opened fire indiscriminately on patrons inside the licensed tavern, and continued shooting randomly at people in the streets as they fled the scene.
Among the deceased were seven men and two women, including an e-hailing driver who was passing by at the time. Some victims were reportedly robbed of valuables, such as cell phones, after being shot. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, with at least 10 requiring treatment.
SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that forensic experts and crime intelligence units have been mobilized to the scene. “The motive for the shooting will be determined by the ongoing investigation,” she stated, urging witnesses to come forward with information.
This incident marks the second mass shooting in South Africa within weeks, following a deadly attack on December 6 at an unlicensed tavern near Pretoria that killed 12 people, including children. Bekkersdal, surrounded by abandoned mine shafts notorious for illegal mining operations, has long struggled with gang violence and the proliferation of illegal firearms.
Community leaders and residents have expressed outrage and fear, with some describing nighttime gunfire as commonplace in the area. Analysts point to organized crime, high unemployment, and socioeconomic challenges as contributing factors to the rising violence in townships.
Police have appealed for calm as the Gauteng Serious and Violent Crimes Unit leads the hunt for the suspects. No arrests have been made yet.
Clarion Newschannel extends condolences to the families of the victims and calls for swift justice to address the scourge of gun violence gripping communities across the nation.
