ABUJA, Nigeria – In a significant international operation, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has apprehended and repatriated a 61-year-old Turkish national who fled his country after being convicted for a multi-million dollar fraud, closing a cross-continental manhunt.
The fugitive, Acar Huseyin, was convicted earlier this year by the Istanbul Anadolu High Criminal Court and sentenced to 14 years, 8 months, and 10 days in prison. In a bold move to evade justice, Huseyin escaped Turkey shortly after the judgment was passed, embarking on a journey through the Middle East before entering Nigeria.
His freedom was short-lived. In July 2025, INTERPOL headquarters in Ankara issued a Red Notice—a high-priority international alert—to its member countries, calling for the location and arrest of the escaped convict.
Acting swiftly on this global alert, the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abuja launched a discreet, intelligence-driven operation. Their efforts culminated in the successful capture of Huseyin in the Federal Capital Territory, preventing Nigeria from being used as a safe haven.
Following the completion of all necessary legal and diplomatic documentation, and in close collaboration with international partners, the NPF formally handed over and repatriated Huseyin to Turkish authorities in Istanbul, where he will now begin his lengthy prison term.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, commended the INTERPOL unit for its exemplary professionalism and efficiency.
“The successful repatriation of Acar Huseyin sends a clear and unequivocal message: Nigeria will not be a sanctuary for fugitives or escaped convicts,” stated IGP Egbetokun. “This operation underscores our unwavering commitment to fulfilling international obligations, enhancing global police cooperation, and standing firmly with the world in the fight against transnational crime.”
This operation highlights the growing effectiveness of Nigeria’s international law enforcement collaboration and serves as a stern warning to criminals who believe they can outrun justice by crossing borders.
