The National Assembly is set to receive President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s proposed 2026 Appropriation Bill today, as the executive arm of government seeks legislative scrutiny of its fiscal plans for the coming year.
In a letter read on the floor of the House of Representatives on Thursday, Speaker Abbas Tajudeen confirmed that Mr. Tinubu has formally requested to address a joint session of the Senate and House at 12:00 noon to lay out the spending proposal.
The National Assembly Clerk’s office has advised that the presentation will take place at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, with security measures requiring all accredited personnel to be in place by 11:00 a.m. Non-accredited individuals are urged to avoid the complex due to restricted access.
The proposed 2026 budget, as highlighted in the 2026–2028 MediumTerm Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) under review by lawmakers, is estimated at about N54.46 trillion, with retained revenue projected at roughly N34.33 trillion.
President Tinubu’s annual budget presentation officially initiates the legislative examination and potential adjustment of the government’s revenue and expenditure plan for the year ahead, a process critical to the approval of federal spending priorities.
Lawmakers and stakeholders are expected to deliberate on the proposals in the coming weeks, with attention on aligning fiscal allocations to priority sectors and ensuring transparency in public spending.
