Nigeria Needs Something Better — Not a Military Coup

By Clarion Newschannel Editorial Board

As the nation grapples with reports of alleged coup plots within the military, one thing remains clear: Nigeria does not need a return to military rule. What the country needs is a movement of the people — a collective awakening of citizens determined to campaign against bad governance, corruption, and policies that deepen poverty and inequality.

The cry for change is not new. Across the nation, frustration simmers over rising hardship, unemployment, and insecurity. The widening gap between leaders and the led has created a sense of disconnect, leaving many to question whether the promise of democracy has truly been fulfilled.

But let’s be clear — a coup is not the answer. History has shown that military takeovers often silence the very voices they claim to represent. They suspend civil liberties, suppress free speech, and derail democratic institutions. Nigeria’s painful experiences under past regimes must serve as a warning, not a template for the future.

True change will not come from the barrel of a gun, but from the collective will of the people — citizens who organize peacefully, demand accountability, and use their voices, votes, and platforms to challenge bad leadership.

Every Nigerian who dreams of a better country must understand that democracy, though imperfect, remains the best system to correct itself — through civic participation, reform, and pressure from an informed citizenry.

Nigeria doesn’t need a coup. It needs courage, unity, and the people’s movement for justice and good governance.
