Nigeria Police Force Clarifies Position on Tinted Glass Permit Policy, Insists Policy Remains Lawful

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has officially clarified that the Motor Vehicle Tinted Glass Permit Policy remains an active and vital part of the country’s regulatory framework. This clarification comes amidst recent public debates and statements regarding the policy’s legality.

In a detailed statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police addressed what it termed “misconceptions” circulating in the public domain, including remarks attributed to the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

The Force firmly stated that, to its knowledge, no final court ruling has declared the tinted glass permit policy unlawful, nor is there any permanent court order restraining the Police from performing its statutory duties related to vehicle regulation.

Reaffirming its constitutional mandate to maintain public safety and prevent crime, the NPF emphasized that it operates strictly within the law. The statement highlighted that the Inspector-General of Police maintains utmost respect for the judiciary and is committed to complying with all valid court orders.

However, the Police made a critical legal distinction: the existence of pending litigation does not automatically invalidate a law or suspend the Force’s responsibilities, unless a court expressly issues an injunction to that effect. The NPF clarified that, currently, no such subsisting order is in place.

The statement acknowledged that the Police have exercised administrative restraint while the matter is before the courts but warned that this should not be misconstrued as a surrender of its lawful authority, especially on issues directly impacting security.

“The policy on tinted glass permits remains relevant to road safety, crime prevention, and national security, subject to judicial oversight,” the statement read. It pointed out that heavily tinted vehicles have been consistently linked to serious crimes, including kidnapping and armed robbery, making their regulation a legitimate security concern.

Addressing public fears about enforcement, the NPF assured that any lawful actions would be conducted “with professionalism, moderation, and strict adherence to human rights standards.”

The Inspector-General of Police also reaffirmed a zero-tolerance policy towards extortion, harassment, or abuse of authority by officers. He warned that any personnel found culpable would face severe disciplinary measures, while cautioning the public against generalizing isolated misconduct cases to tarnish the entire institution.

In a conciliatory tone towards the NBA, the Police described the association as a valued stakeholder and expressed readiness for constructive engagement, aiming to avoid public exchanges that could erode confidence in the nation’s legal and law enforcement institutions.

The statement concluded by assuring Nigerians that the NPF would continue to act lawfully, comply with court directives, and prioritise public safety. The Force urged citizens to remain calm and go about their lawful activities as the judicial process continues.
