NiMet DG Anosike Visits Directorate of General Meteorology, Morocco

Casablanca, Morocco – The Director General and Chief Executive Officer (DG/CEO) of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Prof. Olufemi Anosike, alongside Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), recently paid a working visit to the Directorate of General Meteorology in Morocco. The visit coincided with the ongoing United Nations Systematic Observation Financing Facility (SOFF) workshop for Peer Advisors and Implementing Entities.

During the visit, Prof. Anosike and his Moroccan counterpart, Mohammed Dkhissi, discussed strategies to deepen collaboration in AI-driven weather forecasting, early warning systems, and meteorological data exchange. Both leaders agreed to draft a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a framework supporting the WMO Integrated Global Observing System (WIGOS) Centre and an instrument calibration centre in Abuja, Nigeria.

The meeting also focused on exchanging expertise in data management, ICT solutions, and education and training, including multilingual instruction in French and English to expand the reach of both organisations’ training institutions. Additionally, both parties explored collaboration in Agricultural Meteorology, SOFF Peer Advisory Services, Numerical Weather Prediction, and the integration of Artificial Intelligence in numerical modelling.

Acknowledging the strong existing relationship, which has seen Morocco support Nigeria in meteorological data exchange, participation in NiMet’s Stakeholders’ Engagement Forum, and Nigeria’s involvement in ClimAfrica, both parties pledged to continue strengthening this partnership. Future initiatives include joint participation in climate resilience and sustainability programs.

Prof. Anosike reaffirmed NiMet’s commitment to leveraging international collaboration to enhance meteorological services, advance early warning systems, and support climate resilience efforts for Nigeria and the wider region.
