December 20, 2025 – Former United States President Barack Obama has once more highlighted the unstoppable rise of Nigerian music on the global stage, including tracks by superstars Burna Boy and Olamide in his highly anticipated annual list of favorite songs for 2025.
Continuing a beloved tradition that began during his White House years, Obama shared his year-end recommendations for books, movies, and music on social media on December 18. In his post, he wrote: “As 2025 comes to a close, I’m continuing a tradition that I started during my time in the White House: sharing my annual lists of favorite books, movies, and music. I hope you find something new to enjoy—and please send any recommendations for me to check out!”
The 30-track music playlist features an eclectic mix of global sounds, from pop and hip-hop to indie and world music. Standing out prominently are two Nigerian entries: Burna Boy’s “TaTaTa” featuring American rapper Travis Scott, and Olamide’s “99” featuring Asake, Seyi Vibez, Young Jonn, and British singer Daecolm.
“TaTaTa,” released in May 2025, serves as a single from Burna Boy’s eighth studio album, No Sign of Weakness, blending his signature Afrobeats flair with Travis Scott’s trap influences. Meanwhile, “99,” dropped in June 2025, is a lead single from Olamide’s self-titled eleventh studio album, Olamidé, celebrating themes of wealth, fun, and carefree living through a star-studded collaboration.
Adding to the African representation, UK-based Nigerian artist Obongjayar also earned a spot with his track “Not In Surrender.”
Obama’s selections underscore Afrobeats’ enduring global appeal. This marks another year of strong Nigerian presence on his lists—following 2024 inclusions like Rema’s “Yayo” and Asake’s collaborations—further cementing the genre’s influence alongside international heavyweights such as Kendrick Lamar (with SZA on “Luther”), Lady Gaga (“Abracadabra”), Drake (“Nokia”), BLACKPINK (“Jump”), and Bruce Springsteen (“Faithless”).
Fans and industry observers have hailed the nods as a major boost for Nigerian music, with Obama’s playlists long serving as a cultural barometer that introduces diverse sounds to worldwide audiences.
