PLATEAU MUST BUILD AIRPORTS TO UNLOCK TOURISM, TRADE POTENTIAL – ATSSSAN PRESIDENT URGES GOVT

Jos – The National President of the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), Comrade Ahmadu Illitrus, has called on the Plateau State Government to urgently invest in the construction of airports and translate its aviation development plans into concrete action for the overall growth of the state.
Speaking at the 4th Quadrennial Delegates Conference of ATSSSAN held in Jos, Illitrus declared that Plateau remains Nigeria’s leading tourist destination if the right investments are made to boost tourism, logistics, and trade.
He highlighted untapped opportunities in civil aviation infrastructure at the Heipang-Yakuba Gowon Airport in Jos and urged the state to seize them.
Illitrus announced that ATSSSAN is ready to partner with the state government to organise a civil aviation career exposition aimed at creating awareness among students and primary school pupils about career prospects in the industry.
Recalling the early 1980s when the Plateau State Government sponsored qualified indigenes to study at the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Zaria, through an aviation scholarship scheme, the ATSSSAN President said those “beautiful years” inspired the union to once again seek government support and partnership.
He disclosed that, through frugality and strict financial discipline, the union saved resources and fully liquidated the gratuity of all secretariat workers, including those who resigned voluntarily for higher callings and others who retired after long, dedicated service.
Plateau State Governor, represented by the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Josephine Piyo, described the conference theme — “Human Capital Needs of Civil Aviation in Nigeria: Challenges and Prospects” — as timely and strategic.
The Governor stated that Nigeria’s ability to remain competitive and meet international standards in the fast-evolving aviation sector depends heavily on the quality, competence, and continuous development of its human capital.
He commended the delegates for their thoughtful engagement, saying the conference offered a vital platform to evaluate progress, strengthen strategies, and chart pathways for improved safety, service delivery, labour relations, and technological advancement in the aviation industry.
“Your commitment demonstrates a deep sense of responsibility toward building a more efficient, resilient, and future-ready aviation sector for our nation,” the Governor told the delegates.
