A viral video showing a police inspector being assaulted by a mob in Lagos has been officially clarified by the state police command, which has taken action against both the officer and his attackers.
The Lagos State Police Command has labeled the video’s narrative as “false and misleading.” According to a statement from Police Public Relations Officer SP Abimbola Adebisi, the Inspector attached to the Lagos State Task Force was on official duty enforcing a parking ban on Brown Street, Oshodi. The situation escalated when a motorist he stopped became violent.
During the confrontation, the officer accidentally discharged his firearm. The shot struck the road, and debris injured some passersby. This action incited a mob, which then violently attacked the Inspector, leaving him with serious injuries.
The police response addresses misconduct from all parties involved. The Command confirmed the Inspector “has been subjected to disciplinary actions” for his unprofessional conduct in discharging his weapon. In a parallel move, authorities have arrested thirteen individuals seen in the video assaulting the officer. The suspects, whose full names and ages were released, are in custody awaiting prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police for Lagos State condemned the officer’s conduct but issued a firm warning against attacking law enforcement. He stated that assaulting officers is a serious criminal offense that will not be tolerated. The Command has urged the public to remain calm, avoid spreading false information, and continue to cooperate with the police.
This incident underscores the fragile nature of police-public interactions and the speed at which misinformation can spread. The Lagos Police Command’s dual-focused response—disciplining its officer and prosecuting his alleged assailants—aims to uphold accountability while firmly rejecting mob justice.
