New York,December 28, 2025 –
A powerful post-Christmas winter storm, known as Winter Storm Devin, brought heavy snow, ice, and hazardous conditions to the US Northeast, severely disrupting air travel during one of the busiest holiday periods.
The storm dumped several inches of snow across the region, with New York City’s Central Park recording 4.3 inches – the heaviest snowfall there since January 2022. Higher accumulations reached over 8 inches in parts of Connecticut and up to 11 inches in Hartwick, New York. States of emergency were declared in New York and New Jersey, with officials urging caution on roads due to slippery conditions and potential black ice.
Air travel bore the brunt of the impacts, particularly at the New York area’s major hubs: John F. Kennedy International (JFK), LaGuardia (LGA), and Newark Liberty International (EWR). According to flight tracking service FlightAware, more than 2,700 US flights were canceled since Friday, with over 1,000 cancellations reported on Saturday alone. Nationwide delays exceeded 9,000 on Saturday, many concentrated in the Northeast.
Major airlines, including JetBlue, Delta, American, United, and Southwest, issued travel waivers, allowing passengers to rebook without fees or fare differences. De-icing operations, snow removal on runways, and crew duty limits contributed to the widespread disruptions.
As the storm tapered off on Saturday, lingering light snow and freezing temperatures persisted, but forecasters warned of another system approaching the Upper Midwest and Northeast starting Sunday, potentially bringing more snow, wind, and rain.
Travelers are advised to check with airlines for updates and allow extra time for holiday returns.
