Abuja, December 16, 2025 – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has pledged to sustain the legacies of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, emphasizing discipline, integrity, and a strong focus on national security as foundational principles for governance.
Speaking on Monday at the State House Conference Centre during the unveiling of the biography From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, authored by Dr. Charles Omole, President Tinubu described his predecessor as a leader who exemplified that public office is a sacred trust, not a personal windfall. He highlighted Buhari’s investments in security infrastructure, personnel, and capacities across the armed services, noting that these reforms have enduring impact.
“The measure of a leader is what persists when the sirens fall silent. President Buhari left behind a reputation for integrity, a spartan lifestyle, and the belief that public office is a trust,” Tinubu said. He identified humility, long-term vision, social justice, and security as core pillars of Buhari’s legacy, pledging to build upon them through results-oriented governance.
The President recalled their political partnership, which led to the formation of a broad coalition that reshaped Nigeria’s political landscape in 2015. “Together, we proved that Nigeria could chart a new course. In his memory, let us keep our politics honourable and governance focused on results,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Tinubu administration continues to prioritize education as a key national agenda. Vice President Kashim Shettima recently announced that the federal education budget has surged to ₦3.52 trillion in 2025, more than doubling from ₦1.54 trillion in 2023. This includes a significant boost to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) to ₦1.6 trillion and disbursements through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to over 450,000 students.
On the security front, Nigerian troops have maintained intense operations against bandits and terrorists. Recent reports from the Defence Headquarters indicate that forces neutralized scores of threats, rescued 318 hostages, and disrupted criminal networks in coordinated actions across the country.
In Kwara State, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has demanded urgent federal intervention amid rising banditry concerns, including calls for investigations into alleged links involving local officials. The state government has dismissed these claims as politically motivated, stressing the need for enhanced inter-agency coordination to combat insecurity.
Separately, the Supreme Court on Monday upheld President Tinubu’s powers under Section 305 of the Constitution to declare a state of emergency, dismissing a suit by 11 PDP-led states challenging actions taken in Rivers State earlier this year.
