Clarion Newschannel Exclusive Report – December 20, 2025
In a powerful display of force, the United States military launched large-scale retaliatory airstrikes across central Syria on December 19, targeting more than 70 Islamic State (ISIS) sites in direct response to a deadly attack that claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter last week.
Dubbed “Operation Hawkeye Strike” – a nod to the “Hawkeye State” of Iowa, home to the fallen soldiers – the operation involved a barrage of over 100 precision munitions delivered by F-15E Strike Eagle and A-10 Thunderbolt II fighter jets, AH-64 Apache attack helicopters, HIMARS rocket artillery, and supporting Jordanian aircraft. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the strikes hit ISIS fighters, infrastructure, weapons storage facilities, and operational sites in regions including Deir ez-Zor, Raqqa, Homs, and near the historic city of Palmyra.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth described the action as a “declaration of vengeance,” stating: “Today, we hunted and we killed our enemies. Lots of them. And we will continue.” President Donald Trump, speaking at a rally in North Carolina, hailed the strikes as a “massive” and “very successful” blow against ISIS remnants attempting to regroup.
The operation follows the December 13 ambush in Palmyra, where Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, 29, of Marshalltown, Iowa; Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar, 25, of Grimes, Iowa; and civilian interpreter Ayad Mansoor Sakat of Michigan were killed during a joint U.S.-Syrian counterterrorism mission. Three other U.S. personnel were wounded. U.S. officials attributed the attack to a lone gunman affiliated with ISIS, who was killed at the scene.
These were the first American combat deaths in Syria since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime a year ago. Syria’s new government, under President Ahmad al-Sharaa, expressed full support for the U.S. strikes and reiterated its commitment to eradicating ISIS, stating there would be “no safe havens” for the group on Syrian soil.
CENTCOM noted that intelligence gathered from recent joint operations helped refine targets, delivering a significant setback to ISIS capabilities. With hundreds of U.S. troops still deployed in Syria as part of the ongoing mission to defeat the terrorist group, officials emphasized that such actions prevent ISIS from exploiting post-Assad instability.
Clarion Newschannel will continue monitoring developments in this escalating counterterrorism effort.
