The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially postponed the full implementation of Computer-Based Testing (CBT) for all its examinations until 2027.
The council announced that the complete transition to computer-based testing for school candidates, originally planned for earlier rollout, has been shifted to 2027 due to identified infrastructure gaps across member countries.
While WAEC has successfully conducted CBT for some private candidates (GCE) in the past, the full migration for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates will now take effect in 2027 to allow adequate time to address logistical and infrastructural challenges, particularly in the areas of electricity, internet connectivity, and availability of computer facilities in schools.
The council reiterated its commitment to the eventual full adoption of CBT but stressed that the 2027 timeline will ensure a smooth and effective transition without compromising the integrity and accessibility of the examination.
