Security on Edge: South-West, North-Central States Heighten Vigilance Over ISWAP Threat

Security agencies across Nigeria’s South-West and North-Central regions have been placed on high alert following credible intelligence reports indicating a possible infiltration plan by members of the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP).

According to reliable security sources, intelligence reports from the Defence Headquarters and the Department of State Services (DSS) reveal that ISWAP elements are attempting to expand their operations beyond the North-East, exploiting soft targets and leveraging local networks to establish new cells in parts of Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Oyo, and Ondo States.

The alert, issued earlier this week, warned state governments, security commands, and critical infrastructure managers to intensify surveillance, enhance intelligence sharing, and tighten border monitoring across entry points connecting the northern and southern corridors.

A senior military official, who spoke under condition of anonymity, confirmed that joint task forces have been deployed to sensitive zones, including major highways, industrial corridors, and energy installations. The Nigerian Police Force has also ordered divisional headquarters and tactical units to increase patrols, conduct stop-and-search operations, and collaborate with community vigilante groups.

In Abuja, the Federal Government reassured citizens that the situation remains under control. The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, stated that the security architecture has been strengthened to prevent any infiltration or coordinated attack.

“The Nigerian Armed Forces, in collaboration with intelligence agencies, are fully aware of the threats. We have stepped up preemptive actions to ensure that no terror group succeeds in destabilizing other regions,” the minister said.

Governors of affected states have also activated emergency security committees, urging residents to remain vigilant but calm, and to promptly report suspicious activities to local authorities.

Meanwhile, security analysts warn that the movement of ISWAP elements southward could signify a strategic shift by the terror group, following sustained military pressure in the North-East that has weakened their strongholds in Borno and Yobe States.

Clarion Newschannel TV gathered that the alert extends to critical infrastructure sites such as airports, power installations, rail lines, and public event centers, where security presence has been visibly reinforced.

Despite the heightened tension, authorities maintain that proactive intelligence efforts are ongoing to dismantle any emerging terror cells before they mature into operational threats.

Clarion Newschannel TV Correspondent:
“While the warning is precautionary, security experts say this reflects Nigeria’s evolving counterterrorism landscape—one that requires constant vigilance, regional coordination, and community awareness to ensure safety nationwide.”
