Fresh political realignments may be underway in Nigeria’s North-East and North-Central regions, as strong indications suggest that the governors of Taraba, Plateau, and Adamawa States are considering a possible defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to insider sources within the political circles of the three states, intense lobbying has been ongoing between top APC leaders and some governors currently serving under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform. The discussions, reportedly held both in Abuja and at private locations, are said to focus on securing the governors’ support for the ruling party’s future electoral strategy and national cohesion agenda.
A senior party source told Clarion Newschannel TV Online that the move is part of the APC’s broader plan to consolidate power in key Northern states and weaken the opposition’s hold in regions where PDP traditionally enjoyed strong support.

However, none of the governors—Agbu Kefas of Taraba, Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau, and Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa—has publicly confirmed any plan to defect. Their aides have dismissed the speculation as “mere political distraction,” insisting that their principals remain committed to the PDP’s ideals.
Despite these denials, APC leaders in the affected states have expressed optimism, describing the party as a “natural home” for progressive-minded politicians.
