Kano State Government Lifts Ban, Approves Annual Durbar Celebration Across Four Emirates

In a significant cultural development, the Kano State Government has issued an Executive Order permitting the full celebration of the annual Durbar festival across all four emirates in the state — Kano, Bichi, Rano, and Gaya.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, in a statement released by the office of the Secretary to the State Government, said the approval reflects the administration’s commitment to preserving the rich cultural and traditional heritage of the people of Kano.

The Durbar, a centuries-old royal procession held during major Muslim festivals such as Eid-el-Fitr and Eid-el-Kabir, had faced restrictions in recent years due to administrative and political disagreements within the emirate system.

Governor Yusuf emphasized that the Executive Order restores unity among the emirates and reaffirms the state’s recognition of traditional institutions as vital custodians of peace and cultural identity.

> “The Durbar celebration is not only a reflection of our cultural strength but also a symbol of harmony and royal dignity. Government encourages all emirates to celebrate responsibly in accordance with law and tradition,” the statement read.

Traditional rulers and residents have widely welcomed the decision, describing it as a move that will strengthen cultural tourism and promote peace among the emirates.

Preparations are already underway for what is expected to be one of the grandest Durbar celebrations in recent years, with colorful horse parades, traditional music, and royal displays anticipated to attract visitors from across Nigeria and beyond.
